Music from the movie Overground by Thomas Forget

Thomas was a guy I used to hang around with sometimes. I think he had an apartment in the lower eastside somewhere. One day he hired me to write some music for a film he was making about the 1999 San Francisco mayoral race between Tom Ammiano and Willie Brown. It kind of tells that story, but you watch it now and see that shit never changes. And I quote,’Making the world into a white yuppie mall’.I don’t really think of the 90’s as anything like the 60’s, but there were people who fought back. I’m not totally sure when I recorded this. The movie came out in 2009, so some few years before that I think. I remember it took awhile because I didn’t know what to do. I used to get a lot of good encouragement back then and that helped and I got it going. It ended being more music than Thomas, or anyone else needed, so some of the songs aren’t actually in the film.That’s ok dear listener. This will be your secret. Hello again.

Recorded in 2018, after the last otherwise publicized activity of the band, this album could be described as sort of an acoustic "best of" album. On the one hand, this might just be for the diehards, but it does a good job showing what the band's about for newcomers. Compared to their overall catalog, Doublethink is closest in execution to Me and Mr. Ray and would make a good bonus disc if the latter finally got a new CD pressing. greencakenow

In 1986,before the Internet, the world did seem big as my 20s unfolded. Conversely by comparison I am sadly bigger in 2021 and a world wracked by a pandemic seems so small! This is the sound of beginnings for all concerned and the start of a fantastic musical journey experienced over 3 + decades. It’s easy to overstate the past, but the musical landscape of the 80s outside the main stream was so varied. ML underline that fact and I love them just as much today. John Grant
